Fermi estimation (not a certification exam; a question format used in case interviews)

Fermi estimation is not a certification exam. It is a way of approaching quantities for which no measured data is available: you set out assumptions, break the quantity down and arrive at an estimate that lands on the right order of magnitude. It comes up in the case interviews used by consulting firms and similar employers. Bain & Company's public page describes a case interview as a conversation in which a real business problem is worked through in a structured way, and states explicitly that it is not looking for a single right answer: what it assesses is how the candidate thinks, how they structure the problem and how they build the argument. In other words, what counts is not the number itself but the assumptions behind it and the reasoning that leads to a conclusion. There is no exam body, no passing standard and no fee, and preparation consists mainly of practising on the sample cases that hiring firms publish themselves.

Official page

Who takes it

  • Students applying to processes that include case interviews, such as consulting firms and investment banks
  • Working professionals moving into consulting who are facing a case interview for the first time
  • People who freeze when asked about numbers in an interview and cannot get started on setting out assumptions
  • People who want hands-on practice at breaking a problem down logically and explaining it

What it lets you do

  • Bain states publicly that a case interview does not have a single right answer, and that it looks at how you think, how you structure the problem and how you build the argument. Knowing what is being assessed lets you aim your practice.
  • The sequence of setting assumptions, breaking down, putting numbers in and sanity-checking the result carries straight over to estimating and business planning outside interviews.
  • There is no fee and no fixed date, since this is not a certification. You can practise whenever and as often as you like.
  • Hiring firms publish sample cases officially — Bain's Coffee Shop Co. and FashionCo., among others — so you can test your own approach on material close to the real thing.
  • Bain lists what it looks at in an interview: clarifying the objective and asking questions, laying out a logical structure, talking through your thought process, adapting to the hints the interviewer gives, and highlighting the key issues. You can prepare for how you talk, not only for the estimating.

The exam

As published by No exam body exists, as this is not a certification.. Anything we could not confirm is left out. Check the official page before you apply.

Pass mark
Not published. No passing standard exists at all, because this is not a certification exam.
Format
This is not an exam. It comes up within case interviews at consulting firms and similar employers, in conversation with the interviewer. Bain describes a case interview as a conversation in which a real business problem is worked through in a structured way, and states that it is not looking for a single right answer but assessing how you think, how you structure the problem and how you build the argument.
Languages
Not applicable (this is not an exam).
When it runs
Not applicable (this is not an exam). It takes place within a company's own hiring schedule.
Validity and renewal
Not applicable (not a certification, so the concept of expiry does not arise).

How hard it is

Not published. There is no such measure as a pass rate, because this is not a certification exam. Progress through a hiring process reflects each company's own hiring criteria, and no published figure exists for the difficulty of Fermi estimation on its own.

How long people study

Not published. There is no exam body, so no standard study time is published either. What Bain officially recommends is not putting in study hours but working hands-on through the sample cases it publishes.

Syllabus

  • There is no official syllabus. What follows is what Bain's public page lists as points of focus in a case interview.
  • Clarify the objective, and ask questions
  • Lay out a logical structure to your thinking
  • Talk through your thought process out loud
  • Adjust course in response to the hints the interviewer gives
  • Highlight the key issues

Questions people ask

Is there a qualification or certification for Fermi estimation?
There is not. There is no exam body and no certificate. It is a question format used in the case interviews run by consulting firms and similar employers. This page is not an introduction to a qualification; it explains a format used in hiring.
Will I be rejected if my arithmetic does not come out right?
Bain states publicly that a case interview does not have a single right answer, and that what it looks at is how you think, how you structure the problem and how you build the argument. What is asked of you is less the precision of the number than the assumptions you set out and the reasoning that gets you to a conclusion.
Where can I practise something close to the real thing?
Hiring firms publish sample cases officially. On its case interview preparation page, Bain provides two of its own: Coffee Shop Co. (whether or not to open a coffee shop) and FashionCo. (analysing the causes of five years of declining sales).
Does every role involve a case interview?
According to Bain, case interviews apply when you have applied for roles such as consultant, so it depends on the role. The process generally runs from a review of your application, through a call with a recruiter, to several rounds of interviews.
Is Fermi estimation on its own enough to get through?
It is only one part of a case interview. The points Bain lists include clarifying the objective, laying out a logical structure, talking through your thought process, adapting to the interviewer's hints, and highlighting the key issues. Estimating is one means among those.
