AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate (SAA-C03)
This associate-level certification is aimed at people who design systems on AWS. It tests whether you can choose an architecture along the four lenses of the AWS Well-Architected Framework: security, resilience, performance, and cost. The exam has 65 questions and a 130-minute limit, and 15 of those questions are unscored. Results are reported as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, with a minimum passing score of 720. The fee is USD 150 and the certification is valid for three years. AWS describes the target candidate as having at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services, and the emphasis is less on recalling service names than on deciding which architecture fits a given set of requirements. Because the domains map directly onto Well-Architected lenses — secure architectures at 30%, resilient at 26%, high-performing at 24%, and cost-optimized at 20% — the same structure works as a study outline and as a design review checklist. The official exam guide publishes in-scope and out-of-scope service lists. Japanese is among the available exam languages.
Official pageWho takes it
- Infrastructure and application engineers who have started being handed AWS architecture design work
- People with on-premises design experience who want to shift their center of gravity to the cloud
- Sales engineers and presales staff who propose AWS architectures to customers
- Holders of AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner who want to move to the next level
What it lets you do
- The domains are cut along Well-Architected lenses (security 30%, resilience 26%, performance 24%, cost optimization 20%), so the design review perspective doubles as the skeleton of your study plan
- The official exam guide includes in-scope and out-of-scope AWS service lists, so the study boundary is clear
- Valid for three years once earned, and it can also be renewed by passing the Professional-level exam
- Available in Japanese, and can be taken either at a test center or with online proctoring

The target candidate is described as having at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services. The AWS site also mentions examples of people with one to three years of IT experience preparing for and earning this certification.
How long people study
Not published by the exam body. AWS publishes only recommended experience (at least one year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions that use AWS services) and gives no figure for study hours.

Questions people ask
- Is the passing score 72%?
- No. AWS sets the minimum passing score at 720 on a scaled range of 100–1,000. 720 is a score, not a percentage of correct answers.
- How many questions do I need to answer correctly to pass?
- AWS does not publish this. 50 questions are scored, but the weight of individual questions and the way raw results convert into a scaled score are not disclosed.
- Is there a passing score for each domain?
- No. The official exam guide states that the exam uses a compensatory scoring model, which means you do not need to reach a passing score in each section — only on the exam overall.
- Which version is current?
- SAA-C03. The official AWS exam guide is published for SAA-C03.
- What happens when the certification expires?
- AWS certifications are valid for three years. If you do not recertify before the deadline, the certification is no longer valid. Renewal options are set out on the AWS recertification page.
