Professional Cloud Architect (Google Cloud certification)

Professional Cloud Architect is a Professional-level certification from Google Cloud. It asks you to design an architecture from business and technical requirements, and then covers building and provisioning the infrastructure, security and compliance, optimizing technical and business processes, managing the implementation, and operational excellence. The exam runs two hours and consists of 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. It costs USD 200 and can be taken in English or Japanese. Its defining feature is the case studies: four fictional companies are published in advance, two of them appear on any given exam, and case study questions make up 20 to 30 percent of the paper. Google does not publish a passing score, and results are returned as pass or fail only. The certification is valid for two years. Renewal is handled through a separate, shorter exam rather than sitting the full test again. Because the questions start from requirements rather than from individual services, preparing for it is closer to practicing architectural decisions than to memorizing product features.

Official page

Who takes it

  • Cloud architects who decide how systems are structured on Google Cloud
  • Infrastructure engineers designing migrations to Google Cloud from on-premises or another cloud
  • Solution architects at systems integrators who handle everything from requirements to a proposed architecture
  • Lead engineers responsible for technical decisions on multi-cloud or hybrid setups
  • SREs and IT staff responsible for operational design and cost optimization on Google Cloud

What it lets you do

  • Because the questions center on case studies, preparation trains you to decide on an architecture from requirements rather than to recall individual services
  • You learn to articulate design decisions against the Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework (operational excellence, security, reliability, performance optimization, cost optimization and sustainability)
  • The exam is available in Japanese, so the same content as the English version can be read in your own language
  • If you do not pass, a score report with a breakdown by section is available under Exam History in the Candidate Portal, which helps pinpoint weak areas
  • The two-year validity and the renewal exam build in a cycle for keeping up with changes on the Google Cloud side

Fee
USD 200 (tax may apply depending on the region)
Format

When it runs
Book any available online or test center slot. After a failed attempt you can retake after 14 days; a second failure means 60 days, a third means 365 days, with a maximum of four attempts in two years.
Validity and renewal
Two years. Renewal is a one-hour, 25-question renewal exam (USD 100) in which a single case study built around generative AI solutions accounts for 90 to 100 percent of the questions.

How hard it is

Pass rate: not published by the exam body. The passing score is not published either, and results come back as pass or fail only. Google's recommended experience is three or more years in industry, including one or more years designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud. There are no formal prerequisites for sitting the exam. After a failed attempt you can retake it after 14 days; a second failure means waiting 60 days and a third means 365 days, with a maximum of four attempts in two years.

How long people study

Not published by the exam body. Google does not state a standard number of study hours. The only official guidance is the recommended experience: three or more years in industry, including one or more years designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud.

Questions people ask

What is the passing score?
Google does not publish it. The official FAQ states that Google Cloud exams are designed only to determine whether a candidate meets the minimum passing standard, and that only a pass or fail result is provided. Figures such as '70% to pass' are not official.
Which case studies will appear?
The official exam guide publishes four: Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare and KnightMotives Automotive. Two of them are used on the actual exam, and case study questions account for 20 to 30 percent of the total. You can read all four in advance.
If I fail, can I retake it right away?
You can retake it after 14 days. A second failure means waiting 60 days and a third means 365 days, and Associate and Professional level exams are limited to four attempts in two years. Attempts count regardless of the exam language or the delivery method (online or test center).
Does renewal mean sitting this exam again?
No. Renewal is a separate one-hour, 25-question exam costing USD 100. It centers on a single case study built around generative AI solutions, which accounts for 90 to 100 percent of the questions. You need a valid certification and to be inside the renewal window, which opens 60 days before expiry for Professional level certifications.
Can I take it in Japanese?
Yes. The two languages officially offered are English and Japanese.
