Amazon Web Services, Inc.
AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01)
This is a foundational-level AWS certification covering the basics of AI, machine learning, and generative AI, along with where the AWS AI services fit. It is aimed at people who use AI rather than build it: AWS describes the target candidate as someone with up to six months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS. The exam has 65 questions and a 90-minute limit, and 15 of those questions are unscored. Results are reported as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, with a minimum passing score of 700. The fee is USD 100 and the certification is valid for three years. Generative AI fundamentals and applications of foundation models together account for 52% of the scored content, with responsible AI and security, compliance, and governance at 14% each. The official exam guide explicitly puts model development, data and feature engineering, and hyperparameter tuning outside the scope of what the target candidate is expected to do, and it publishes lists of in-scope and out-of-scope AWS services so you can draw a boundary around what to study. Japanese is among the available exam languages.
Official pageWho takes it
- Business and planning staff who have been asked to evaluate adopting generative AI
- Engineers who will use AWS AI services and want the overall picture first
- Sales and presales people who propose AI adoption to customers
- Anyone responsible for drafting internal guidelines on AI use
What it lets you do
- The objectives are organized into AI/ML fundamentals, generative AI fundamentals, applications of foundation models, responsible AI, and security and governance, which lets you reorder fragmented knowledge
- Responsible AI and governance account for 28% combined, so you pick up vocabulary for explaining usage rules, not just the technology
- No prerequisites, 90 minutes, and USD 100 make it a low-cost entry point into the AWS certification track
- The official exam guide includes lists of in-scope and out-of-scope AWS services, so the study boundary is clear
- Valid for three years once earned

How hard it is
The pass rate is not published by the exam body. AWS publishes a minimum passing score of 700 on a scaled range of 100–1,000, which is not a percentage of correct answers. The target candidate is described as having up to six months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS, and this is the most basic tier of AWS certification (Foundational). Model development, feature engineering, and hyperparameter tuning are explicitly listed as out of scope.
How long people study
Not published by the exam body. AWS publishes only recommended experience (up to six months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS, and familiarity with core services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, Amazon Bedrock, and Amazon SageMaker AI) and gives no figure for study hours.

Questions people ask
- Is the passing score 70%?
- No. AWS defines the passing standard as a scaled score of 700 on a 100–1,000 range and does not publish it as a percentage of correct answers. The "70%" figure often seen online is an unofficial conversion.
- Are all 65 questions scored?
- No. 50 questions are scored and the remaining 15 are unscored; AWS uses them to evaluate candidate questions for future exams. The unscored questions are not identified during the exam.
- Can I take the exam in Japanese?
- Yes. Japanese is on the official list of available languages. Note that AWS has announced Italian and German will no longer be offered after October 15, 2026.
- Do I need experience developing models?
- No. The official exam guide lists developing or coding AI/ML models and algorithms, implementing data engineering or feature engineering techniques, and performing hyperparameter tuning among the job tasks the target candidate is not expected to be able to perform.
- How long is the certification valid after I pass?
- AWS certifications are valid for three years. Renewal options are set out on the AWS recertification page, which covers both passing the current version of the same exam and passing a higher-level exam.
