Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Developer

The Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Developer exam (MCE-Dev-201) is an intermediate credential for technical staff who build on Marketing Cloud Engagement. It tests personalisation with AMPscript and SSJS, data manipulation with SQL and data extensions, and the SOAP and REST APIs together with OAuth authentication. The weightings assume you can actually write code and queries: Programmatic Languages is 35%, API 22% and Data Management 22%, which is 79% of the exam between them. Areas where operational mistakes tend to happen, such as the contact model, send logs and the contact deletion process, are explicitly in scope. Holding the Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist credential is a required prerequisite. The exam is 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in 105 minutes with a passing score of 63%, and questions are based on the Summer '22 product release.

Official page

Who takes it

  • Developers building emails, landing pages and forms in Marketing Cloud Engagement
  • Production and development staff responsible for personalising dynamic content with AMPscript or SSJS
  • Data staff who build segment extraction, imports and exports using data extensions and SQL
  • Implementation staff who connect Marketing Cloud to external systems through the SOAP and REST APIs
  • People who already hold the Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist credential and want to move on to the developer credential

What it lets you do

  • The implementation skills that matter in Marketing Cloud Engagement (AMPscript, SSJS, SQL and the APIs) are laid out as a weighted official exam outline
  • 79% of the exam (Programmatic Languages 35%, API 22%, Data Management 22%) is spent actually writing code and queries, which makes it a different kind of exam from the declarative, configuration-focused credentials
  • Points where operational mistakes tend to happen, such as the contact model, send logs and the contact deletion process, are explicitly named in the exam outline
  • The official exam guide states that knowledge of the MobilePush SDK, the Journey Builder SDK, custom components and Marketing Cloud Connect configuration is not required, which lets you narrow your study
  • It is not on the list of 24 credentials being retired on February 1, 2027, so it continues to be offered

Questions people ask

I am searching for "Marketing Cloud Developer". Is that the same certification?
It is. The current official name is Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Developer, which is the name used on both the official exam guide and the Trailhead Academy credential page. The exam code is MCE-Dev-201.
What is the prerequisite, and does an older credential still count?
The prerequisite is the Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist credential. That credential was itself renamed from Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Email Specialist on July 24, 2026; if you earned it under the old name it is treated as the same credential and no retake is needed.
Can I pass without being able to write code?
Judging by the weightings, it is safer to assume not. Programmatic Languages is 35% (AMPscript and SSJS syntax and functions), API is 22% (SOAP/REST and OAuth authentication flows) and Data Management is 22% (writing SQL and interpreting the results), which is 79% of the exam spent reading and writing code and queries. The official exam guide also lists being able to write basic SQL including JOINs as a requirement.
Is there anything I can skip?
Yes. The official exam guide states that candidates are not required to know how to configure the MobilePush SDK, the Journey Builder SDK, custom components or Marketing Cloud Connect. There is no need to spend time there.
Is this credential among the 24 being retired in 2027?
No. Checking the retirement list in the official Certification Retirements in 2027 FAQ, this credential is not included. The Marketing Cloud credentials being retired are Marketing Cloud Account Engagement Consultant and the Advanced Cross Channel, Intelligence and Personalization Accredited Professional credentials.
