Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist

The Marketing Cloud Engagement Specialist exam tests whether you can run email marketing as day-to-day work inside Salesforce's Marketing Cloud Engagement product. The published scope covers building content in Email Studio and Content Builder, managing data extensions and subscriber data, automating work with Automation Studio and Journey Builder, and reading post-send reports and applying Einstein features. The exam is 60 multiple-choice questions answered in 90 minutes, with a passing score of 67%. There are no prerequisite credentials. Salesforce describes the intended candidate as someone with at least six months of hands-on experience with the Marketing Cloud email application and related tools, and rates the credential as intermediate. The exam is proctored, either at a test center or online, and no reference materials may be used during it. It is offered in English, Japanese and French, and can be booked at any time rather than on fixed exam dates. The credential itself carries no stated expiration date, but it lapses unless the Trailhead maintenance badge is completed once a year. It was previously published under the name Marketing Cloud Email Specialist.

Official page

Who takes it

  • Marketing practitioners who run email sends in Marketing Cloud Engagement day to day
  • People already working in Email Studio, Content Builder and Journey Builder who want to replace self-taught habits with a structured approach
  • In-house staff bringing Marketing Cloud operations in house on the brand side
  • Agency and partner staff who run Marketing Cloud email operations on behalf of clients
  • Anyone planning to move on to the Marketing Cloud Engagement Consultant credential later

What it lets you do

  • Learn systematically when to use Email Studio versus Content Builder, and how send configuration works (sendable data extensions, send classifications)
  • Sort out data extension design, import methods and the choice between segmentation tools, so building the audience for a send stops being guesswork
  • Gain a working criterion for deciding whether to build a given process in Automation Studio or in Journey Builder
  • The official Marketing Cloud Engagement Consultant exam guide lists this credential as recommended (not required), so it serves as a stepping stone to the consultant level
  • Because the maintenance badge has to be completed once a year, you build the habit of tracking feature changes release by release
